Kiljunen appointed Belarus rapporteur for the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe

​Finnish Member of Parliament Kimmo Kiljunen (Social Democratic Parliamentary Group) has been appointed Belarus rapporteur by the Parliamentary Assembly's Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy on Wednesday, September 23.

Mr Kiljunen will prepare a report on the Call for an inclusive national political process in Belarus. The aim is to promote and support political dialogue inside the country. Kiljunen is expected to establish contacts with various stakeholders and facilitate discussion between representatives of the government, the opposition and the civil society with a view to finding a peaceful solution to the political crisis in Belarus.

Kiljunen is Chairman of the Finnish Delegation to the Council of Europe and Vice-President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

The Council of Europe was established in 1949 and is the oldest and largest political cooperation organization in Europe. Finland became a regular member in 1989. The Parliamentary Assembly consists of representatives appointed by the parliaments of the member States and meets four times a year in Strasbourg.
